EDR is pleased to be a part of uncovering Syracuse’s history as featured on Syracuse.com. Our archaeological work for the NYSDOT on the I-81 Viaduct Project is part of a larger transformation of Syracuse’s highway infrastructure.
Our team of archaeologists, historians, and experts have been digging deep—literally—into Syracuse’s history. Through detailed analysis of historical maps and documents, the team has discovered privies dating back to the mid-1800s, which could offer a glimpse into the lives of past residents. These “time capsules” contain artifacts including old pottery and broken plates, and even a pocket watch—items that help provide details about daily life in Syracuse during the 1800s and 1900s.
“This is their life,” Daniel Seib, EDR Senior Archaeologist, said to Syracuse.com, “These are all of the things that they held and they used and this tells you about how they lived their lives. It’s a very personal thing. So whenever we get artifacts like this, we treat them with great respect.”
EDR’s involvement in the I-81 project highlights the firm’s commitment to preserving local history while supporting critical infrastructure development. The findings will be shared with the New York State Museum for public access.
