On-Call Architectural Historian

EDR has immediate openings for experienced, team-oriented, On-Call Architectural Historians with demonstrated expertise in historic properties documentation and assessment in the Northeastern U.S.  This role will be focused on cultural resources surveys for renewable energy, transportation, and infrastructure projects, and may include supporting historic preservation planning projects and preparation of historic rehabilitation tax credit applications.

This role is a temporary, on-call position, and may be either remote or report to one of EDR’s offices in New York (Syracuse, Rochester, Albany, Saratoga Springs, White Plains), Ohio (Columbus), or Pennsylvania (Hershey) as needed.  The ideal candidate will meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards in History, and/or Architectural History (Appendix A, 36 CFR Part 61) and have a MA/MS in Historic Preservation Planning, History, or similar field of study. Candidates considered for this role will have at least 3 and 5 years of experience in a similar or related position in a professional setting.

Essential skills include:

  • Experience as lead investigator for cultural resources surveys.
  • Ability to travel (locally and out of state when required), including the need for overnight stays based on project demands.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions at times for extended hours (over 8) and multiple days as needed.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility assessments.
  • Working knowledge of GIS and GPS technology, mapping, analysis, and data processing.
  • Strong research abilities including independently coordinating and conducting targeted research at local, state, and national repositories to document the history of properties and provide information for the development of historic context statements.
  • Strong writing skills and demonstrated ability to prepare cultural resources reports, including documents such as historic resources surveys, NRHP nominations, Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit applications, heritage/preservation treatment and management plans, historic structure reports, and similar types of studies.
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating adverse effects to historic properties, with an emphasis on consideration of visual impacts to historic properties.

Schedule and Compensation:

  • Schedule: Monday through Friday; 8-hour days (40 hours weekly off Saturday and Sunday; our typical schedule may need to be adjusted to meet specific project demands).
  • Compensation: $25-$35 per hour, based on experience and work history; overtime paid for hours worked above 40.
  • Lodging: Single occupancy hotel room; hotel rooms can be provided over weekends for non-local staff.
  • Expenses: Reimbursement for meals and expenses (with receipts) on workdays.
  • Safety: All employees will adhere to EDR’s standard health & safety procedures and employment policies.
