National Grid
Substations are typically constructed on confined sites, and standard stormwater management practices often require a large footprint that may exceed the available space on a given site.
EDR worked with the National Grid Corporation and the State University of New York College of Environmental Science & Forestry to research and design an alternative cross-section design that incorporate stormwater management into National Grid’s substation cross section to minimizing the need for stormwater management outside of the substation footprint.
In 2016, the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) gave approval to begin using the cross-sections for new projects.
EDR has designed more than seven new substations and substation expansions for National Grid that employ this innovative method. EDR has also designed a number of Battery Storage Systems with the alternate stormwater management system.
