EDR’s team was initially asked to review a private operator’s plan to reinforce an existing push wall at Rockland Green’s Bowline Transfer Station. The facility is permitted to accept 300 Tons Per day of municipal solid waste, as well as construction and demolition debris. After discussions with Rockland Green personnel, it was agreed that the best course of action would be to replace the push wall and provide a temporary push wall in a different interior location to allow room (and time) for constructing a robust push wall. Additional challenges associated with this work included poor soil bearing capacity (the transfer station building foundation was installed on deep piles) and a floating, fiber reinforced concrete tip floor. A temporary push wall was completed by a private operator and a new push wall was designed by EDR that included micro piles as an independent foundation to the building. All construction was completed while the transfer station remained open to serve local commercial waste haulers.
